"Garden Of The Gods", original oil painting (9" x 12") by artist Elizabeth (Betty) Moore
Fresh off the easel - "Garden Of The Gods" (9" x 12" oil on linen) is ready to be framed for my Facebook Live Charity Art and Sale Show, 7pm (CT), Friday, August 28, to benefit Bike MS: Inside Out.
Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark with dramatic views and 300' towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies.
With more than 2 million visitors a year, parking is limited and traffic can be heavy at times. I photographed this view of Cathedral Valley while stopped in traffic. It shows some of its unusual hogback formations of deep-red, pink and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestone, including The Cathedral Spires and The Three Graces. Cheyenne Mountain can be seen in the distance.
While I was working on this painting, I learned from family members about five major wildfires that have burned just over 130,000 acres in total. At this time, only one has any containment. Highway 70, the major road through the mountains has been closed and many families have been evacuated. Smoke from the fires can be seen from the NOAA-NASA Suomi NPP satellite. And heavy ash is everywhere.
Smoke from the fires has already reached the Garden Of The Gods in Colorado Springs, located seventy miles south of Denver. It may be several months before the fires are contained and the skies clear so visitors can enjoy hiking, technical rock climbing, road and mountain biking and horseback riding along 21 miles of trails in this amazing park.
I may change the title of this painting to "Praying for Colorado." I’m also inspired to start on the next painting in the series with a Colorado theme for my Facebook Live Charity Art and Sale Show. More details next week... Stay tuned.
