In 1868, land owned by a St. Louis merchant Henry Shaw, was donated to the City of St. Louis the condition it would be used as a park forever. The land adjoining the Missouri Botanical Garden, founded by Shaw, became known as Tower Grove Park. In addition to numerous Victorian Pavilions and the Music Stand, Shaw designed an area called The Ruins, with damaged limestone blocks from the Lindell Hotel that had burned, and a three-tiered, cast-iron fountain. The Piper Palm House is the oldest greenhouse west of the Mississippi River.
